How to volunteer at Stony Point
We encourage you to consider applying for membership at Stony Point. The process is easy. You can download our application here.
There are two categories of membership: Operational and Support (Fire Corps). Operational members 'run' calls and respond to emergency incidents. Support members assist with the multitude of tasks necessary to support the fire company (shopping, maintenance, fund raising, ect.).
There are three types of Operational members: Firefighter, Medical Responder and Driver/Pump Operator.
Operational members are assigned to a crew and must be available to respond to calls one night a week (from 6 pm to 6 am) and for two 24 hour weekend shifts per month. On average an operational member will be on duty 92 hours a month. Since each shift has an overnight component, a good bit of the duty is spent sleeping (unless there is a call). Operational members must be trained or receive a certification as Fire Attack, EMT-B or EVOC/BPO within one year of membership. Certified fire training classes are regularly taught at the station. Training is free and all gear and equipment is provided.
Firefighter - Must be trained to at least Fire Attack. These members respond to a wide range of incidents and constitute the core of our membership. Fire Attack training is about 65 hours. Firefighter 1 training is about 100 hours. Most of this training can be delivered on a crew night - usually on Thursdays.
Medical Responder - Must be trained to at least EMT-B. These members respond to any call that has an emergency medical component. EMT-B training is about 130 hours. This training is locally available several times a year.
Driver/Pump Operator - Must have EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator's Class) and BPO (Basic Pump Operations). These members drive and operate the fire apparatus on the incident scene. This training is available every few months in the county.
Stony Point is not a high call volume station. We responded to about 425 calls last year. Approximately 1/3 of the calls were medical emergencies, 1/3 motor vehicle collisions and 1/3 fire related.
